Following this he travelled with the Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) to southern Nigeria to work as a surveyor on a hospital project. Stephen returned to England in late 1993 to take up a position with Watts and Partners in their Manchester office.
Stephen relocated to Ireland in 1997, to head up the Building Surveying Department of Lisney, one of the country's leading general practice firms. Stephen rejoined Watts in 2003 to take over the day to day running of their new Dublin business where he spent the next 10 years.
When the opportunity to establish a new practice arose in 2012 Stephen joined forces with his former colleague Allan Murphy to set up Scott Murphy.
Stephen is an active participant in the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI). He is a SCSI appointee to the Technical Registration Board and a regular assessor for the Building Surveying Division's assessment of professional competence. Stephen is also a member of the RICS dilapidations forum and is regularly engaged as technical expert on construction related matters.
Having qualified as a Construction Technician in 1991, Allan worked in the design office of a leading timber frame manufacturer, IJM Engineering Limited, based in his native Monaghan. In 1993 Allan returned to full time study and graduated with a degree in Building Surveying from Dundalk Institute of Technology.
Allan moved to Dublin in 1995 and joined Lisney, a multi-discipline surveying practice, where he qualified as a Chartered Building Surveyor and in later years, headed up the Building and Project Consultancy team. In 2004 he joined the Dublin office of international consultancy practice, Watts and Partners, and held the position of Director for five years before resigning in late 2012 to form Scott Murphy with former colleague, Stephen Scott.
Allan is a professional member of both The Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland and The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. An exponent of Dundalk Institute of Technology as a centre of learning for Building Surveying, Allan previously served as an external examiner on construction and surveying courses in the college.
